Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose (স্যার জগদীশ চন্দ্র বসু) was one of the prominent scientists who first demonstrated that plants have life. He was born on November 1858 in Munshiganj (now in Bangladesh). After completing his research with Nobel Laureate Lord Rayleigh at Cambridge, Bose joined the Presidency College as a Physics Professor. Despite lack of funding, Bose continued his research and had great success in the field of wireless signaling. By using semiconductor junctions, he was the first-ever scientist to detect radio signals.

Bose’s research in plant physiology is perhaps his all-time greatest contribution. He invented an instrument called, Crescograph to measure even the minute response of plants to different stimuli. His efforts got fruitful when he scientifically proved correspondence between animal and plant tissues. He was also the pioneer of microwave optics. To facilitate his research, Bose founded the Bose Research Institute (now Bose Institute) in 1917 which was the first interdisciplinary research center in Asia. Bose was not only a biologist, physicist or botanist but also a writer of science fiction. He is called the father of Bengali science fiction. Some of his famous literary pieces include Response in the “Living and Non-Living” (1902) and “Nervous Mechanism of Plants” (1926). Bose’s research made a way for future inventions in the radio and plant science. He passed away at the age of 78, on November 23, 1937.
